New Basics

I feel that not only can I confidently and enthusiastically solve and complete arithmetic (from basic algebra to multivariate calculus), but I can quickly learn and even teach it. Math, over the last few years, has become one of my favorite things to do, and never feels like a chore or “work”. I understand the problems, theorems, and ideas quickly, and can just as soon apply and solve them. I can solve math problems at any time of day, and anywhere (windows, mirrors, and of course, whiteboards!). As for speaking, I have always been able to effectively communicate my thoughts, but I also have learned to overcome a bit of discomfort and talk to all those around me. I actively participate in my college classes (yes, even the night classes), ask questions, and form study groups. I talk to strangers just to further my knowledge of math and science! Which brings me to my last “New Basic”, science! I may not have taken many more science classes than the average highschooler, but I’ve shown an avid interest and appreciation of all the sciences. I thoroughly enjoyed algebra-based physics, and went on to take calculus-based physics at COA. I enjoyed both regular and HP Biology, and enjoyed Chemistry so much that I would TA for the class before and after I took it! I tried my hand at the computer sciences, learning about machine learning with a science fair project (taking me to ACSEF for the first time, without help or oversight of a mentor!). I even got a chance to test out psychology, taking Human Sexuality--which is still one of my favorite classes--over the summer. After each of these classes or experiences, I try to apply at least one thing I learned to my everyday life.

Expectations

Mathematics

Performs basic computations, and approaches practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques. Communicates and thinks mathematically with confidence and enthusiasm.

Speaking

Organizes thoughts and communicates ideas, knowledge, and information through fluent, responsible speech.

Science

Understands how things work and the underlying scientific principles, applies the scientific method to everyday life.
